So shocking to wake up to the news of David Bowie’s death on Monday, January 10, 2016.
I love his music, what he has accomplished and
best of all, his legacy which is his positive influence on music, culture, fashion, etc. He is described as an innovator. His influence on style and fashion was particularly ground-breaking. He actually made it cool for men to wear makeup. How
is that possible! Yes, he was that cool!. He inspired so many, which is why he is so loved, greatly admired and respected.
To write a befitting tribute to such an ICON, I had to find out more about him. As I watched all the videos, interviews, documentaries about his life and even his portrayal of “The Elephant Man” on Broadway,
I came to understand the immense talent of the man. His music career spanned over five decades and he sold over 140 million albums. He won 14 awards out of 52 nominations which include a Grammy Award, Brit Awards, Ivor Novello Award (for song writing) and
a Daytime Emmy Award.
It is easy and safer to conform, to be conventional, to do what everyone else does. On the other hand, it takes immense courage to be different, to want to stand out and be
a trailblazer. That is what David Bowie was and why me and so many others respect him so much. He was brave and released a new album while battling liver cancer in the last 18 months of his life. He could have spent his last days relaxing, taking it easy,
making a bucket list and enjoying new experiences, but instead he chose to keep working hard to release his final album. Wow! Kudos to him!
He was a good father, as he took custody of his son and raised him after his divorce from his first wife, Angie Bowie. He is alleged to be a good husband to Iman as they have a loving marriage
that has lasted over 20years. What more can I say! He is just an amazing human being.
The world has lost one of its rare gems. He was extremely talented and very intelligent. He kept his personal
life private and did not court the limelight or publicity, unlike most celebrities these days. He let his work speak for him, which is what a true artist does. Even more remarkable, he turned down the coveted royal CBE award and also a knighthood. To quote him;
would never have any intention of accepting anything like that. I seriously don't know what it's for. It's not what I spent my life working for."
As I dance to his hit song “Let’s dance”, I celebrate his life and thank God for giving him to the world. He was one of a kind. Yes, a TRUE STAR has died. A loss to the UK and the rest of
the world. Adieu Mr David Bowie. Rest in peace.
